Carlene Springer earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1998. She worked as an oncology nurse from 1999 until returning to school and earning her Master of Science in Nursing degree in 2013 from UNMC.
Springer started her career at Mary Lanning Healthcare and moved to the Morrison Cancer Center when it opened in 2004.
In addition to her education and experience, Springer has special insight into the world of cancer patients. In 2010, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatments while pursuing her advanced degree.
“It gives me a better understanding, not just of breast cancer patients, but patients with any type of cancer.”
She is working to develop a survivorship program at Morrison Cancer Center to maximize the quality of life for survivors and their caregivers. The goals are to increase survivors’ adherence to clinical follow-up recommendations and access to appropriate care, improve quality of life and self-efficacy of survivors, improve communication between oncologists and primary care providers and activate healthy behaviors.
Carlene and her husband, Gene Boner, live in Hastings. They have three children, Jeremy, Brittany and Matthew.
