MLMH School of Nursing 1915-1988
From The History of Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, 1915-1988, by Tamerra Sears Pauley (2008).
“Mary Lanning, the only child of Alice and William Lanning, died of an unknown illness while she was home visiting from college in 1910. The Lannings subsequently established three memorials in her name... In Hastings, Nebraska, where she was born and raised, they established Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and the MLMH School of Nursing as living memorials to Mary’s life and dreams... The School of Nursing closed in 1988 after seventy-three years in operation. A total of 1,453 students completed their nursing education at the hospital based school.
The partnership between MLMH and MLMH School of Nursing was a successful one. Student nurses served the hospital well during good times and bad. In addition to their labor, they brought youthful enthusiasm, integrity, and a commitment to professionalism that set a high standard as other departments evolved... The hospital provided experiences and an education of the highest caliber. Graduates from the School of Nursing who pursued careers in the Hastings area found employment readily and maintained an unsurpassed quality of care for the hospital and other medical facilities. Other alumni took their diplomas and competed for jobs across the country and around the world. Either way, education received at MLMH School of Nursing opened doors and created opportunities.”
