The Total Joint Unit at Mary Lanning Healthcare is a specialized unit just for Joint Replacement Patients.

- Joint Replacement candidates (hip and knee replacements) participate in pre-operative education to prepare for surgery. This education is called Joint Journey.
- Once your surgery is scheduled, you will be contacted to set up a time for this education.
- Please select a family member or friend to serve as your coach.
- You and your coach will meet one-on-one with the Orthopedic Nurse Navigator at the Hastings Orthopaedics Office.
- You will learn what to expect before, during and after your procedure.
- This session will be 60-90 minutes.
Total Joint Unit
- Following surgery, you will stay on the Total Joint Unit.
- This unit is only for well patients who are recovering from elective joint replacement surgery.
- During your stay, you will be cared for by highly trained staff specializing in the care of total joint replacement patients.
- All members of your care team – physicians, physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists, nursing staff, social workers and the orthopedic nurse navigator — specialize in hip, knee and shoulder replacements.
- You and your coach are key members of the team.
- Each of our specialists will work with you on a specific portion of your recovery.
- They work together to ensure your best possible patient experience and outcomes.
Postoperative Rehabilitation
- You will receive physical therapy daily during your stay. In these session you will perform exercises, practice correct transfer techniques, going up and down stairs and learn to walk and move about with assistive devices.
- You will receive morning occupational therapy daily. These sessions will address such matters as bathing, dressing and toileting while maintain proper safety precautions and utilizing assistive devices. These sessions may also involve instruction about safety in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Length of stay on the Total Joint Unit is one to two days, depending on your physician’s plan of care for your recovery. You may be sent home doing outpatient or home health therapy. This will be discussed with you and your coach by the team caring for you.
