Holter: Continuous Heart Monitor
Definition:
Holter Monitoring or ambulatory continuous electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) recordings on a portable recorder. Your physician may order for you to wear this anywhere from 24 hours to 30 days depending on the device. You will conduct your normal daily activities while wearing this. It is indicated for a variety of symptoms such as: palpitations, dizziness, anxiety, fatigue, lightheadedness, syncope (passing out) or shortness of breath.
What to Expect:
- You will check in through the North Admission Entrance.
- Applying the device will take approximately 15 minutes.
- You will not need to change your clothes.
- You will keep an activity diary for the purpose of comparing daily events in the ECG tracings and may push a button to mark an event symptom.
- This will be thoroughly explained to you and questions answered.
Preparation:
- There is no preparation prior to this exam.
- You may eat your regular diet and take your medications as scheduled.
- Bring your medication list.
- Skin prep for the adhesive patch or discs may include shaving hair, cleaning your skin with alcohol and preparing your skin with a special pad.
Post Test:
A physician will read (interpret) your information.
