Echocardiogram (ECHO)
Definition:
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound test (bouncing sound waves to obtain a picture) that examines the heart. It provides the cardiologist with information such as; the overall pumping function of the heart, chamber sizes, and evaluation of the heart valves. Other uses for an echocardiogram are diagnosis of fluid around the heart, congenital heart diseases, blood clots or tumors within the heart, infections of the heart valves, and elevation of pressure within the lungs.
What to Expect:
You will check in through North Admission Entrance. The exam can take up to 45 minutes to complete. You will be asked to change into a gown and can expect to lie on your left side for imaging. We will be using gel to enhance ultrasound images and have you on a heart monitor throughout the exam. You may feel some pressure as images are obtained.
Preparation:
- There is no preparation for this exam.
- You may eat your regular diet and take your medications as scheduled.
Post Test:
- Your physician will notify you of your test results at a later date.
- You may return to your normal diet and activity.
