Information for Dads & Support People
Here are a few tips to make your stay more comfortable and less confusing:
Admission
- Bring your insurance or Medicaid card with you.
- Come to the Emergency Department or the North Entrance/Admission Services. Please do not come directly to the Family Care Center.
- Please move your car out of the Emergency Department parking lot as soon as possible. You may park in the lot on the east side of the hospital throughout your stay/visit.
- Bring all personal care items for your stay.
- Don’t forget your camera!
Labor & Delivery
- The restrooms are located at the end of the hall between the elevators.
- Alert the nurse if you are likely to become faint at the sight of needles or blood.
- Cell phones may be used in all rooms.
- You may cut the umbilical cord and keep the scissors as a memento.
- You may help give the baby his or her first bath.
- For security purposes, you and the baby’s mother will have armbands that match the baby’s armband. Only those matching bands will be allowed to take the baby from the nursery.
- Always transfer your baby in the crib/bassinet while he/she is lying flat.
- Don’t give your baby to anyone who does not have a red stripe on his or her name badge.
Post-Partum Room
- The Family Care Center floor is a locked unit.
- A daily room service breakfast is provided for mom and dad or the support person. Please wear appropriate clothing in the hallway.
- You may use the bathroom or shower in the room. You may also sleep in the room. Please use the sleeper sofa (ask the nurse for linens). You may bring your own small air mattress if desired. Please wear appropriate bedtime clothing.
- Your baby’s armband will serve as a visitor’s pass if you come and go after visiting hours.
- You will be instructed on how to bathe the baby, change diapers and care for the cord and circumcision. You are encouraged to help care for your baby.
- Bring the cradle part of the car seat to the room for fitting to your new baby. Leave the base installed in the car.
- If you are filling out paternity papers, you must have photo identification.
