Advance Directives
Most of us do not like to think about the end of our lives or even about being ill. But the best time to talk about your wishes during these times is before they happen. Family members often say it makes their job easier if they know the wishes of their loves ones ahead of time. That's why Mary Lanning Healthcare encourages its patients to think about their rights, under Nebraska law, to make decisions about medical care.
Because crisis situations can be hard on everyone involved, writing down your preferences ahead of time can help make these times a bit easier. By doing some advance care planning, you give your loved ones peace of mind knowing they honored and respected your wishes if they ever have to make medical decisions for you.
MLH offers free Advance Directives booklets to help you in this planning. Anytime you are a patient at MLH, you will be asked whether you already have an Advance Directive or if you would like more information. Booklets are available to anyone ages 19 and older.
Each booklet contains forms to create a Living Will and a Power of Attorney for Healthcare.
What is a Living Will?
In a Living Will document, you state the kinds of medical treatment you want or do not want to receive when you are terminally ill and unable to make your own decisions. It is called a "LivingWill" because it takes effect while you are still living but unable to communicate your choices.
What is a Power of Attorney for Healthcare
In a Power of Attorney for Healthcare document, you name another person to act as your "representative." This person will make medical decisions for you if you become unable to make them for yourself. This person can be a family member or close friend. When choosing a representative, think about people you know who share your views and values about life and medical decisions.
