Lori's nomination letter:
Our daughter was a patient in Mary Lanning for 33 days. She was admitted with pneumonia and sepsis on February 15th and discharged on March 18th.
She was on the 6th floor then moved to the 4th floor and then moved to ICU for about a week and then moved to 6th floor and had a feeding tube put in and finally was moved to 3rd floor and all the nurses were very caring to her and to our family.
When she was admitted to the 3rd floor, this nurse was one of her main nurses and she was so caring and took as much time as needed to help our daughter. Our daughter developed thrush from all of the antibiotics and was in a lot of pain from that and each time this nurse administered the medicine for that (which I guess tastes terrible) she would encourage our daughter stating that this will help you in a few days and it did!
I might mention that our daughter was in a very bad accident 32 years ago and was in Lincoln General 2 months and Madonna for 10 months and came home 1 year after the accident. She had many injuries and did have one leg amputated and hardest for her is she lost her ability to talk. After being in a coma for 4 months, when she woke up her mind was excellent and in fact she has since gone back to UNL and graduated. She was a senior in UNL when the accident happened. She uses an iPad and it has a speech app downloaded on it so she is able to communicate with us.
Her nurse was never too busy (and she was a busy Nurse) to sit by our daughter while she would type her message and always answered her questions and was very encouraging to her. Our daughter had a few days trying to eat again and was very hard for her and she was very discouraged and this nurse seemed to know the right things to say to her and would finally bring a smile to our daughters face again. She was always there for her Dad and I and explained everything we wanted to know and encouraged us to call anytime we needed to. She was as kind and compassionate as anyone could ask for.
All of the help of the 3rd floor were the greatest and our daughter enjoyed them all as did our family so it was hard to single out just one person but Lori just seemed to know the right things to say and do to make our daughter’s stay the best it could be.
