Mary Lanning Healthcare is partnering with the Hastings Economic Development Corp. and other healthcare organizations in the region to highlight healthcare careers.
All Adams County sixth- through 12th-graders are invited to Healthcare on the Horizon open house event on Tuesday, October 22, from 4:30-7 p.m. at Hastings Senior High School, 1100 W. 14th Street. Please enter through the main entrance along the circle drive. The vision of the event is to engage and prepare the future healthcare workforce by showcasing career exploration, educational pathways and job opportunities in the region.
Carol Hamik, RN MSN BSN CPN CPST LSSGB, MLH Nurse Recruiter & Clinical Outreach Director, said the event was inspired by Manufacturing Madness at HHS. During that event, several area companies seeking students interested in the manufacturing field came to talk about opportunities.
“We hope to turn this event into an annual opportunity to bring professionals into the school where students and their parents can interact and learn about the vast variety of healthcare careers,” Hamik said. “We can help steer students down a path that can involve dual-credit courses to save on educational expenses after high school graduation.”
The Bryan College of Health Sciences, Mary Lanning Healthcare School of Radiologic Technology, Hastings College, the University of Nebraska at Kearney/University of Nebraska Medical Center and Central Community College will be on hand, in addition to several MLH departments and other healthcare organizations from the area. Students will be able to learn about a myriad of jobs within the healthcare industry, including part-time opportunities they could pursue in high school. (MLH and CCC currently work together to provide a CNA certification class at HHS.)
In addition, students and their families can attend any of three, 15-minute breakout sessions offered throughout the evening: CNA class benefit (Classroom 8); Nursing-provider education path (Classroom 10) and Allied Healthcare Pathways — Radiology technologist, respiratory therapy and laboratory science (Classroom 12).
Door prizes and refreshments will be available. Students and their families may come and go throughout the event.
