HASTINGS — Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
During November — American Diabetes Month — the ADA and the Mary Lanning Healthcare Diabetes Program hope to raise awareness of the disease, its causes and its costs.
Mary Lanning Healthcare recently opened a new clinic, Central Nebraska Endocrinology, adding an on-site endocrinologist, Dr. Vinay Singh. In addition, an Omaha endocrinologist continues to visit with area patients through the telemedicine program.
DeAnn Carpenter, ML Diabetes Program coordinator, said the addition of Dr. Singh provides a new facet of diabetes care for patients in Hastings. Also, the Diabetes Program, now located at Hastings Family Care, 223 E. 14th Street, Suite 100, continues to offer services including individual sessions, classes, a self-management group and a special, grant-funded program for hispanic residents.
“We want to stop the growth of diabetes and its deadly consequences,” Carpenter said. “Choosing a healthy, active lifestyle is one of the most important things you can do to manage or prevent diabetes.”
During November, the ADA is offering the program, America, Get Cooking to Stop Diabetes! Practical tips for preparing good-for-you dishes that taste great can be found at http://diabetesforecast.org/adm.
