“A little boost to keep going…”
That’s how Holdrege native Trevor Wilder, who now lives in Omaha with his family, describes Camp Hot Shots, a longtime offering of the Mary Lanning Healthcare Diabetes Program
Trevor was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was just 10 years old. It was then that he started attending Camp Hot Shots, a summer fun and educational camp organized by trained diabetes professionals.
“The camp counselors and all the leadership were always very welcoming and always had an understanding that was kind of hard to come by,” Trevor said. “It was always nice to have that encouragement. I haven’t always been the best about managing my diabetes but having this community of people, and the information they provided, really has helped.”
He said campers loved being able to get away for a bit and do the normal summer camp activities while also knowing “we were in really good hands.”
Wilder said he wants other kids with diabetes to know that managing the disease is a day-by-day process.
“Take the bad days with the good and stick with the good as much as you can,” he said. “Know that some days are just not going to go your way and don’t put off proper diabetes management.”
