Choosing a career can be tough, especially in a field like healthcare where there are so many options.
Mary Lanning Healthcare and Bryan College of Health Sciences have teamed up to help area high school students learn about their options. The first Medical Academy of Science and Health (M.A.S.H.) takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. The event starts in the Bryan College of Health Sciences on the Third Floor of the MLH Medical Office Building.
Students will learn about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and take part in a simulation, learning about nursing skills. Later in the day, students will visit various MLH departments, including radiology; respiratory therapy; laboratory; physical, speech and occupational therapy; pharmacy and emergency services.
The students will end the day around 3 p.m., when a medical helicopter will land at MLH. Students will explore the helicopter and learn about the roles associated with helicopter transport.
Carol Hamik, RN MSN BSN CPN CPST LSSGB, MLH Nurse Recruiter, said it is important that students become interested in healthcare careers.
“Sparking interest at an early age is one of our goals,” she said. “We want to showcase MLH and the talents of our staff while we work to recruit and retain future healthcare workers to our region.”
