Central Nebraska Pain Clinic (Hastings)

Kartic Rajput, MD PhD, has joined Mary Lanning Healthcare as a Pain Management Specialist providing pain management services through Central Nebraska Pain Clinic in Grand Island and Hastings, and psychiatric services through The Lanning Center in Hastings.

Dr. Rajput received his medical degree in 2001 at Delhi University in New Delhi, India. He received his PhD in Pain Pharmacology in 2009 from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. His residency in psychiatry was at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He served a fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine at Department of Anesthesia, Georgia Health Sciences University.

Dr. Rajput said he is one of a few pain management specialists who also are psychiatrists. He specializes in use of medications, injections and interventional therapy to battle chronic pain. He treats all types of pain including fibromyalgia and migraine headaches. He also specializes in palliative care for cancer patients.

Dr. Rajput said he takes a whole-body approach to dealing with pain issues, not only looking at the one area currently causing pain, but the entire person, their past functions and how their pain impacted those functions.

“With pain, I feel like there’s a big psychiatric component that people are unaware of,” he said. “Fifty to 60 percent of people who have chronic pain have psychiatric issues such as depression and anxiety. Pain has a profound effect on psychiatric health.”

This doesn’t mean patients are imagining their pain or the “pain is all in their head,” Dr. Rajput said. But pain can cause a lack of sleep or loss of work or previous functions, resulting in depression.

Dr. Rajput lived in New Orleans for more than 10 years, surviving Hurricane Katrina.

“I think going through that, I learned the community as a whole plays a bigger role in a person’s wellbeing and brings them out of tragedy,” Dr. Rajput said.

Although he felt a part of the New Orleans community, he and his wife, Sapna Purawat, decided to move to the central Nebraska area because they felt it was a good place to raise their children, ages 5 and 1. Dr. Rajput enjoys playing tennis and cricket.
