The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is getting ready for their annual conference as hundreds of medical professionals from all around the world get ready to share their findings and research.

One Hastings oncologist is getting ready to present his findings from right here in Central Nebraska.

"And they present their new research data, their new discoveries, their new inventions, and then every year ASCO organizes this meeting to educate cancer professionals," said Dr. Mehmet Copur, oncologist at Marry Lanning Hospital in Hastings.

"You can't no longer practice and not know what the rest of the world is doing," Copur said.

He going on to say that he’s looking forward to attending the conference filled with networking and opportunity.

"And I have been fortunate since 1995 that I have been attending ASCO. Every year I have one of two presentations that was accepted for either publication or presentation. We are fortunate that we have our data at the Morrison Cancer center that will be presented as an abstract," Copur said.

For those wondering what exactly an abstract is?

"So these background results and conclusion could consist of an abstract, which is a summary of the big research project you have done," Copur said.

Dr. Copur said he's fortunate his work and research here at Marry Lanning's Morrison Cancer Center has contributed to the world's oncology literature, along with their data.

"Our data about the molecular testing of the cancer in the Central Nebraska. We have put together the abstract book and the rest of the attendees will have the chance to read and learn from our experience," Copur said.

He going on to say that education is one of the principal goals of this meeting saying it's a perfect time to evaluate clinical trials and see what is or what isn't working.

"We are bringing cutting edge cancer care to local, rural Nebraska population and we will be establishing our clinical trials programs with both clinical and basic science and we are also providing state of the art standard care with the treatment," Copur said.

The annual conference runs from May 31st through June 4th.
