Prostate cancer patients in the region now have an added layer of protection thanks to a new procedure at Mary Lanning Healthcare.
Casie Grubbs, MLH Surgical Services Director, said MLH, Central Nebraska Urology and the Morrison Cancer Center have teamed up to offer the SpaceOARTM Hydrogel from Boston Scientific. When placed surgically prior to radiation therapy, the hydrogel creates a space between the prostate and rectum.
Other than skin cancer, prostate is the most common cancer among men, according to the American Cancer Society. Radiation therapy is effective in treating prostate cancer but there are potential side effects to other areas, including the rectum.
Grubbs said the placement of the hydrogel does not take long, and is an outpatient procedure with short recovery time. MLH purchased a new surgical ultrasound machine to assist with accurate placement.
Dr. Randy Duckert, radiation oncologist at the Morrison Cancer Center, said the hydrogel offers an extra layer of protection so that prostate cancer treatments are easier and potentially of shorter duration.
“Anything we can do to keep patients safer and eliminate potential issues during treatment is a plus,” Duckert said. “This procedure gives prostate cancer patients and their providers a definite advantage.”
