The Mary Lanning Healthcare Laboratory recently received reaccreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
Accreditation by CAP is a stringent ongoing process that requires more than 1,100 specific requirements well beyond government minimums with on-site inspections every two years. The MLH Lab had only eight deficiencies, none of which impacted quality.
A CAP inspection team came to MLH, to review practices, procedures and paperwork. The team consisted of trained, practicing lab professionals.
Adam Horn, MD, MLH Pathology/Laboratory Medical Director, said he is honored and pleased by the reaccreditation.
“Not all labs are CAP-accredited,” he said. “The process truly helps ensure that our lab is safe and patient-focused.”
According to the CAP web site, there are 38 other labs in Nebraska accredited by CAP.
Terri Brown, MHA MT(ASCP), MLH Laboratory Director, said the reaccreditation shows the efforts of the entire department staff, especially considering the pandemic’s impact on the lab operations and staff.
“Our employees know that we value their strengths at Mary Lanning and we all work as a team to provide the best services available,” Brown said. “Our commitment to quality, safety and patient care is reinforced with the CAP Accreditation Program.”
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have granted the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program deeming authority, which allows CAP inspection in lieu of a CMS inspection. In addition, the CAP retains deemed status with the Joint Commission, United Network for Organ Sharing, the National Marrow Donor Program, the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapies, and many US state agencies.
