Dr. Skoch named Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Michael Skoch has delivered hundreds of babies over his 25 years as a primary care physician. Dr. Skoch is widely known for his compassionate, patient-centered care.

Several months ago, Brad Neet, Mary Lanning Healthcare President and CEO, said he encouraged Skoch to consider a new focus.

“Dr. Skoch’s experience in the community and his passion for excellence in care made him the right choice to help Mary Lanning achieve its vision of world class engagement, one relationship at a time,” Neet said.

On September 1, Dr. Skoch will transition from seeing patients at Moscati Health Center, which he founded in July 2000, into a new role, Chief Medical Officer/Vice President of Medical Affairs at     Mary Lanning Healthcare.

“I believe that a Chief Medical Officer must exemplify compassion, advocating on the patient’s behalf with the care team and hospital administration.” 

Skoch said he assumes the role with a profound sense of responsibility.

“Ideally, the CMO personifies an awareness of the hospital in regard to matters of patient care and safety,” Skoch added.

Skoch, who received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Kansas, began medical practice in Hastings in 1987 at the Physician’s Building. He founded Moscati Health Center, which became part of Mary Lanning Healthcare in February 2011. He served as president of the Medical Staff at Mary Lanning prior to bridging into the Chief Medical Officer position.

“As Medical Staff president, I became exposed to a world of medicine that exists apart from what I saw as a primary care physician,” Skoch said. “This is an opportunity to hopefully have a positive impact at the system level so that we can continue to provide the best medical care possible to the patients we serve.”

As Chief Medical Officer, Skoch said, his responsibilities include attention to quality standards and efficiency of care, establishment of chronic disease management methods in the office setting to minimize patient admission days and service as the primary liaison between the medical staff and administration. He also is working with the hospital’s implementation of Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE). 

“With the Affordable Care Act and even outside of that, there is an increasing focus on not just doing medical care but doing it well. Being able to substantiate what we do will make patient lives better, provide quality care and eliminate error,” Skoch said.

“Part of the Mary Lanning Healthcare vision is to improve relationships with area critical access hospitals,” Skoch said. “We want to work together with these hospitals to bring needed services to patients in their home communities.”

He said he also would like to work on building relationships with area physicians, and is working on gaining certification through the American College of Physician Executives.

Despite his enthusiasm for his new position, Skoch said he will miss the relationships with his patients.

“I make the transition with a tremendous sense of gratitude for my patients’ years of loyalty and for allowing me to serve them and their families. I want my patients to know that I’ll continue to advocate for their health and well-being as I transition into this leadership role,” Skoch said.
