HASTINGS — While most people in central Nebraska were watching the sky become dark on Monday, the Casas/Carmichael family of Grand Island was busy with the dawning of a new life.
Tony Casas and Shannon Carmichael's baby girl, Emma, was born at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings at 12:26 p.m., just 32 minutes before the total eclipse. The eclipse process began around 11:34 a.m. so a portion of the sun was already obscured at the time of the baby’s birth.
The family is expected to go home later today.
