Scott Edward Bell, MD, MPH, PhD

Dr. Scott Bell was born in Homestead, FL and grew up in Houston, TX. He attended Hastings College in Nebraska for his undergraduate education, and met his wife while attending college. His parents both grew up in Hastings, and his grandparents lived here for many years. After obtaining his B.A. degree in Biology, Dr. Bell went on to study medical research in molecular pathobiology. He received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University with research on the genetic regulation of blood vessel formation. Further advanced degrees include a M.P.H. (Master’s in Public Health) also from Texas A&M University, studying Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

After his years in medical research and population studies, he matriculated at University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio where he received his M.D. He returned to the Midwest and completed residency training for Neurosurgery in Denver, CO at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is board eligible in Neurological Surgery with over 2000 operations and procedures performed during training, and likewise more than 2000 procedures in the time that he has been practicing.

Dr. Bell’s professional interests lie in brain and spine trauma, brain tumors, aneurysms, pediatric neurosurgery, degenerative brain and spine disease, and spinal cord tumors and other abnormalities. He is accomplished in brain surgery for trauma, resection of brain and spine tumors, open treatment for brain aneurysms, and surgery for pediatric brain conditions. He is likewise proficient in spinal cord and spinal nerve decompression for trauma and degenerative disease, as well as spine stabilization and fusion. He has published multiple research articles and given talks on angiogenesis, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, and spine injuries. He has participated in training neurosurgery residents and medical students aspiring towards neurosurgery, and most enjoys the reward of helping patients with brain and spine illnesses and injuries.

After his time in Colorado, Dr. Bell and his family returned to the south, and arrived in Columbus, GA to begin his practice in neurosurgery. Dr. Bell’s connection to the community led him back to Hastings to begin a neurosurgery program at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. He is an active member of the neurosurgical and local community, with membership in the American Association of Neurological Surgery, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Southern Neurosurgical Society, American Medical Association and Hastings Museum.

Dr. Bell is an athlete, having played football and run track at Hastings College. He is married to Tracy (Roemmich) Bell, whom he met at Hastings. Tracy is likewise an athlete having played volleyball through college. Tracy has coached volleyball for over 15 years, most recently in Denver prior to arriving in Georgia. They have 2 children whose interests include sports, math, science, and performing arts.
