HASTINGS — Mary Lanning Healthcare and the Morrison Cancer Center will participate as a regional location in Vice President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot Summit on June 29.
MLH is the only location in Nebraska to participate, along with other communities across the country, in this first-of-its-kind event. Biden called for the Cancer Moonshot Summit to convene cancer researchers, oncologists, care providers, advocates, patients and survivors under the national charge to double the rate of progress toward a cure. The Vice President will be speaking at the Washington, D.C., summit, a day-long event.
“MLH and the Morrison Cancer Center have been given the unique opportunity to serve as a regional host for this tremendous event,” said Mark Callahan, MLH Chief Operating Officer. “We are proud to bring together medical professionals, patients, survivors and community members, raising awareness of the march toward a cure for cancer.”
The MLH event will take place at noon Wednesday, June 29, in MLH Conference Room #1, Ground Floor. The public is invited with special invitation to medical professionals, cancer patients and survivors and family members. Refreshments will be provided.
Vice President Biden’s speech will be shown via recording. Dr. Pornchai Jonglertham and Dr. Shamila Garg also will be available to provide information.
Though there have been national cancer conferences before, the White House said Biden’s summit will be the first to focus broadly on the more than 100 types of cancer, rather than on one specific form of the disease. The regional summits will bring communities together to discuss how cancer affects them, share input on the Moonshot Initiative, generate ideas about how individuals and organizations can better engage in the national effort and create ideas for new collaborations and actions.
“We hope the community will join us in this summit, which we hope will increase the pace of progress in cancer research, prevention, treatment and care,” Callahan said.
